In 2019, fashion looked to the future as it recognized the past — celebrating milestones, breaking new ground, and making way for the next decade of style! Fashion legends like Grace Jones hit the catwalk in Paris for Zendaya’s debut runway collection with Tommy Hilfiger. Christian Siriano continued to be one of the industry’s most inclusive designers. Milan had a major year: Versace’s 90s revival, Prada’s dark romance, and Jeremy Scott’s big win at Moschino! Back in New York, Badgley Mischka celebrated three decades of American glamour, while Anna Sui’s supermodel lineup showed off her enchanting creations, and Wes Gordon looked on the bright side at Carolina Herrera. Style showmen delivered fashion theater: Marc Jacobs turned off the lights – and turned up the drama! – while Thom Browne captivated Paris with a surreal seaside retreat. The unstoppable Rihanna continued her creative domination with the launch of her luxury line, Fenty! Plus: the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute went camping – in couture! – and the industry said goodbye to the irreplaceable Karl Lagerfeld.

Looking back, 2017 was a year for celebration, goodbyes, and making powerful statements on the runway! In New York, Michael Kors lifted the fashion community’s spirit with his optimistic runway. At Roberto Cavalli, Peter Dundas presented his final collection for the house. Monique Lhuillier celebrated 20 years in fashion. Designers and fashion insiders had much to say about the politically charged and socially conscious Fall 2017 season. Marc Jacobs put on a much-talked about show with hip-hop soul. At Fendi, Karl Lagerfeld offered a breath of fresh air with a sophisticated and subtle collection. The Metropolitan Museum of Art celebrated Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons, with a blockbuster exhibition and red carpet extravaganza. Plus, Christian Siriano celebrated beauty and diversity at New York’s Plaza Hotel… and much more, in the Year in Fashion 2017!

Look back on the Year in Fashion 2016 as mainstay megabrands put their best foot forward and new designers made a name for themselves, all while embracing diversity. Fashion’s blockbuster brands pull out all the stops; Chanel redefined traveling in style, Versace celebrated the power of women, and Jean Paul Gaultier partied the night away. Marc Jacobs created a world of whimsy while the Rhode Island School of Design looked to the 90s and payed a special tribute to Todd Oldham. Donna Karan reflected on her storied career, while the next generation of designers showed the world what they’re made of. Alexander Wang celebrated 10 years, and Jeremy Scott delighted with his car-wash themed collection for Moschino. Paris welcomed China’s Guo Pei with her debut Haute Couture collection. Sophie Theallet emphasized the beauty of diversity, and Lady Gaga supported her friend and stylist, Brandon Maxwell. Model and Instagram darling, Gigi Hadid stormed the international catwalks - plus, the year would not be complete without the 2016 Met Gala featuring a star-studded red carpet for the opening of Manus X Machina!

 

As we look back at The Year in Fashion, 2015 was a year of goodbyes and retrospectives, but also a time to look ahead. Jean Paul Gaultier bid adieu to ready-to wear. Peter Copping debuted his first collection for Oscar de la Renta. With the exhibition China: Through the Looking Glass, the Metropolitan Museum of Art staged its biggest costume extravaganza yet. Donna Karan took her last bite of the Big Apple. Fashion meet art with the retrospective exhibition Ralph Pucci: The Art of the Mannequin. We put the spotlight on model extraordinaire, Cara Delevingne. The 2015 CFDA Awards celebrate the year’s best. Plus, experience runway shows from Carolina Herrera, Alexander McQueen, Julien MacDonald, Emilio Pucci, Burberry Prorsum, and the opening of the new Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City!

In this issue of the Year in Fashion we recap the best shows and events of 2014. For Spring, Paris bid adieu to Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton, and Rick Owens’ spring show was the most innovative presentation of the season. In Milan, Prada’s murals were the talk of the town, and across the channel Somerset House mounted a special tribute to the eccentric style of Isabella Blow. The annual Met Gala celebrated the opening of the newly refurbished and renamed Anna Wintour Costume Institute with a blockbuster show featuring the genius of Charles James. For Fall, Donna Karan celebrated 30 years of her iconic label, Ralph Lauren presented his very first Polo show, and London powerhouse Burberry Prorsum returned to the “Bloomsbury girl”. And the show of the year was presented in a giant grocery store set from fashion legend Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel! Plus, the year is capped off with the annual CFDA Awards featuring fashion icon Rihanna!

 

2013 saw the fashion community celebrating fantastical fashion moments, hailing sensational comebacks, marking political milestones and surmounting unexpected misfortunes. At Alexander McQueen, designer Sarah Burton offered a wasp-waisted, sweet escape for Spring. Miuccia Prada explored the Land of the Rising Sun in a thoughtful and eye-opening collection. We indulged in the deliciously affordable and fabulous capsule collection of Anna Dello Russo for H&M. Master milliner Philip Treacy presented a collection of headwear inspired by Michael Jackson and by Lady Gaga, who opened the show. Fellow designers and famous faces were on hand to support Hedi Slimane and his highly anticipated runway debut for Saint Laurent! New York City got punk’d with the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s latest fashion exhibition, Punk: Chaos to Couture. Thom Browne spun a romantic tale around classic tailoring and got a big boost from First Lady Michelle Obama. We give the Beauty Buzz backstage at Fendi for Fall. Julien Macdonald returned to London Fashion Week with a Sin-City sensibility. Fashion’s biggest designers, models and celebrities honored the best and brightest in the industry at the 2013 CFDA Fashion Awards. Oscar de la Renta crafted a Fall collection that was full of youthful energy - and an exciting collaboration with John Galliano in the design room. Plus, optimism and glamour were brought into the light at Marc Jacobs’ dazzling Fall 2013 show!

At Louis Vuitton in Paris, Marc Jacobs took us on a breathtaking carousel ride of craftsmanship and romance for Spring 2012. We checked out The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology to find out what style icon Daphne Guinness had in her couture closet. Spring 2012 saw a series of “firsts.” Marchesa presented its first runway show and immersed us in an aquatic kingdom. Celebrity stylist turned designer Rachel Zoe had a fashion week premiere for her eponymous line. Also making headlines, the effortless beauty of Temperly London did not go unnoticed. In the Fall 2012 season, Vera Wang cast a spell over the industry with her captivating all-black bridal collection. At Alexander McQueen, Sarah Burton’s feminine touch left us speechless. 2012 was the year Alber Elbaz commemorated his ten years at Lanvin, and we were invited to look back at the festivities. Celebrities also stepped out to celebrate the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Impossible Conversation between Miuccia Prada and Elsa Schiaparelli. Plus, the movers, shakers, winners and honorees of the 2012 CFDA Awards… and more!

 

In the Year in Fashion 2011, Karl Lagerfeld channeled the French film, Last Year at Marienbad for another breathtaking Chanel presentation. The fashion industry came together to celebrate Women’s Wear Daily’s 100th year. At The Museum at the Fashion Institue of Technology, journey from the avant-garde Eighties style revolutionaries to Harajuku street style, and discover how Japanese fashion has transformed in the Japan Fashion Now exhibit. Marc Jacobs presented a runway full of high shine Seventies luxe, paying tribute to the legendary Yves Saint Laurent for Spring/Summer 2011. American beauty, Joan Smalls emerged as the breakout model of the moment. Pop star, Lady Gaga, muse to designer Nicola Formichetti, took to the runway for his debut Mugler show. It was also the year of blockbuster exhibits, from the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Savage Beauty tribute to the late Alexander McQueen, to a first-ever international multimedia exhibition on Jean-Paul Gaultier in Montreal. Gucci’s 90th anniversary show was the best of ultra-sexy glamour, with Seventies era Anjelica Huston and musician Florence Welch as muses. We look back at the Autumn/Winter 2011 season’s most shocking moment with the dismissal of John Galliano and his final collection for Christian Dior. Plus, the results of the 2011 CFDA Awards and more!

The Year in Fashion 2010 brings you the brightest fashion highlights of the year! The Spring/Summer 2010 season kicked-off with Fashion’s Night Out—an initiative founded by Vogue editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour. America’s acclaimed couturier, Ralph Rucci, allowed a rare behind-the-scene look at a fitting for his Spring collection. The Museum of Art and Design in New York celebrated former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright’s soft power with the first ever exhibition of her personal broach collection. Burberry made its runway debut on home soil at London Fashion Week. The year also saw the top talent in fashion honored at the Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards. The relatively unknown but highly creative New York designer Sophie Theallet became the CFDA/Vogue Fashion winner. The Dolce & Gabbana 20th Anniversary collection brought the audience to tears. From Paris, ‘90s top model Kristen McMenamy served as muse to design duo, Viktor & Rolf. Plus, we pay special tribute to the late Alexander McQueen.
